The Lucky Hare
1 The Cobbles, Bishop's Castle, Shropshire SY9 5BN
Directions
The Lucky Hare is at the top of the old town on a cobbled ‘shut’ between Market Square and Main Street. It is opposite The House on Crutches and adjacent to the Town Hall. It is close to a number of excellent shops, three or four coffee shops and three of the town’s six pubs, including The Castle Hotel (which has a stunning garden and has just celebrated its 300th birthday) and The Three Tuns, home of the UK’s oldest brewery, founded in 1642. There are no parking charges and few parking restrictions in Bishop’s Castle, but, being an old town, the streets are narrow and it is usually easier to park in the free car parks.
The town is renowned for its regular cultural, artistic and sporting events – including a Michaelmas Fair, beer festival and pageant. For details visit www.bishopscastle.co.uk/tourism
Bishop's Castle is 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of the Wales-England border, about 20 miles (30 km) north-west of Ludlow and about 20 miles (30 km) south-west of Shrewsbury. To the south is Clun and 20 minutes to the east are Craven Arms and Church Stretton, both of which have railway stations.
The town is within an agricultural area and has also become known for its alternative community including artists, musicians, writers and craftspeople.
The surrounding area is hill walking country and Bishop's Castle is a "Walkers are Welcome Town", gaining the award in 2008. The long distance footpath the Shropshire Way runs through the town and Offa's Dyke is only a few miles to the west.
The ancient trackway of the Kerry Ridgeway, a prehistoric Bronze Age route, runs from the town.
